　　When the officer surrendered, the others gave up too.

　　At the beach, some parts are deep, and others are shallow.

　　Rhythmic speech or writing is like waves of the sea, moving on ward with alternating rise and fall.

　　Linguistics is the study of the way in which language works.

　　Professor Wilson's approach to research is eclectic. He learns all the currently relevant theories and then tries to combine the best features of each theory.

　　I gripped the wheel as hard as I could with both hand sand began to turn it.

这类连接词有：similarly, that is, in otherwords, for example, likewise等。

　　They seemed to have problem with directionality. In otherwords, they got lost.

这类连接词有：but，in spite of，on the contrary，where as，paradoxically等。

　　The questions were civil enough in form，but Ms Taylor thought she could detect a hidden malice.

这类连接词有：so，therefore，hence等。

　　I had not cleaned his car for over two months so it was filthy.

　　The disease is not contagious: you can't catch it by touching somebody.

Thing do not change; we change.Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.
Henry David Thoreau

第一篇：A Grain of Sand 一粒沙子
William Blake/
To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild fllower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

第二篇：Love Your Life 热爱生活
Henry David Thoreau/享利.

However mean your life is,meet it and live it ;do not shun it and call it hard names.It is not so bad as you
are.It looks poorest when you are richest.The fault-finder will find faults in paradise.Love your life,poor as
it is.You may perhaps have some pleasant,thrilling,glorious hourss,even in a poor-house.The setting sun is
reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man's abode;the snow melts
before its door as early in the spring.I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there,and have
as cheering thoughts,as in a palace.The town's poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives
of any.May be they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving.Most think that they are above
being supported by the town;but it often happens that they are not above supporting themselves by
dishonest means.which should be more disreputable.Cultivate poverty like a garden herb,like sage.Do not
trouble yourself much to get new things,whether clothes or friends,Turn the old,return to them.Things do
not change;we change.Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.

These Things Shall Never Die

The pure.the bright,the beautiful,
That stirred our hearts in youth,
The impulses to wordless prayer,
The dreams of love and truth; 让我们梦想着爱与真理的;
The longing after something's lost,
The spirit's yearning cry,
The striving after better hopes-
These things can never die.
The timid hand stretched forth to aid
A brother in his need,
A kindly word in grief's dark hour
That proves a friend indeed ;
The plea for mercy softly breathed,
When justice threatens nigh,
The sorrow of a contrite heart-
These things shall never die.
Let nothing pass for every hand
Must find some work to do ; 尽你所能地去做；
Lose not a chance to waken love-
Be firm,and just ,and true;
So shall a light that cannot fade
Beam on thee from on high.
And angel voices say to thee---
These things shall never die.

第四篇： Think it over……
Today we have higher buildings and wider highways,but shorter temperaments and narrower points of view;
We spend more,but enjoy less;
We have bigger houses,but smaller famillies;
We have more compromises,but less time;
We have more knowledge,but less judgment;
We have more medicines,but less health;
We have multiplied out possessions,but reduced out values;
We talk much,we love only a little,and we hate too much;
We reached the Moon and came back,but we find it troublesome to cross our own street and meet our
neighbors;
We have conquered the uter space,but not our inner space;
We have highter income,but less morals;
These are times with more liberty,but less joy;
We have much more food,but less nutrition;
These are the days in which it takes two salaries for each home,but divorces increase;
These are times of finer houses,but more broken homes;
That's why I propose,that as of today;
You do not keep anything for a special occasion.because every day that you live is a SPECIAL OCCASION.
Search for knowledge,read more ,sit on your porch and admire the view without paying attention to your
needs;
Spend more time with your family and friends,eat your favorite foods,visit the places you love;
Life is a chain of moments of enjoyment;not only about survival;
Use your crystal goblets.Do not save your best perfume,and use it every time you feel you want it.
Remove from your vocabulary phrases like"one of these days"or "someday";
Let's write that letter we thought of writing "one of these days"!
Let's tell our families and friends how much we love them;
Do not delay anything that adds laughter and joy to your life;
Every day,every hour,and every minute is special;
And you don't know if it will be your last.

The life I desired
William Somerset Maugham
That must be the story of innumerable couples,and the pattern of lifeof life it offers has a homely grace.It
reminds you of a placid rivulet,meandering smoohtly through green pastures and shaded by pleasant
trees,till at last it falls into the vasty sea;but the sea is so calm,so silent,so infifferent,that you are troubled
suddently by a vague uneasiness.Perhaps it is only by a kink in my nature,strong in me even in those
days,that i felt in such an existence,the share of the great majority,something amiss.I recognized its social
value.I saw its ordered happiness,but a fever in my blood asked for a wilder course.There seemed to me
something alarming in such easy delights.In my heart was desire to live more dangerously.I was not
unprepared for jagged rocks and treacherous,shoals it I could only have change-change and the
exicitement of unforeseen.

A catch-22 意为：an impossible situation; one in which the solution or success depends on mutually dependent factors: A depends on B; B, in turn, is dependent on A; so it is an interlocking situation in which there is no way out.

Western literate and art as a whole, in fact, show the strong influence of Greek and Roman mythology, and to a lesser extent, Norse mythology.

Europa is a princess who was abducted and carried off by a white bull to Crete (克里特岛，希腊文化的发祥地), the bull was actually Zeus(宙斯), king of the gods in Greek mythology.

Paris, son of the king of Troy （Troy这个词都认识吧。特洛伊，就是让人用木马计攻陷了的城市，不过这个词为人所熟知怕是要拜托黑客们的backdoor艺术）； in Greek mythology, his abduction of the beautiful Helen led to the Trojan War.

In some ways “The Odyssey” is like our “Pilgrimage to the West”. There ‘re numerous English allusions to events or people in the story, such as Cyclops(赛克罗波斯) a one-eyed giant that Odysseus had to deal with; or Circe(赛丝), the beautiful enchantress who charmed her victims and then turned them into swine.

Achilles heel:
the weak or vulnerable point of a person (organization, country, etc.). The story is that Achilles, one of the Greek heroes in the “Iliad” (另一部古希腊史诗般的著作：《伊利亚特》), another epic attributed to Homer, was taken by his mother when he was a child and dipped in the rive Styx(冥河) to make him invulnerable. The water washed every part of his body except the heel in his mother’s hand. It was precisely at his vulnerable point that Achilles was later killed in battle.

He would be an excellent candidate for the position. He was energy, knowledge and experience. But he’s got an Achilles heel – his terrible temper. Three months ago he beat up a colleague in an argument.
